World of Beer Homebrew Competition

The Milwaukee Monster Mash

WINNERS & AWARDS

In early May, The Beer Barons of Milwaukee Homebrew Club hosted their 1st Milwaukee Monster Mash homebrew competition, a BJCP-sanctioned event. Fifty-three entries from Wisconsin & Illinois were dropped off at three Milwaukee-area homebrew shops, including The Purple Foot, Frugal Homebrewer - West Allis and The Marketbasket, with a fourth drop-off point added late.

On Saturday, May 6, Jerry Uthemann, Mike Schwartz, Jeff Enders, Dan Schlosser, Kelly Kramer, and John O’Brien judged entries in six different BJCP categories: Bock; Porter; IPA, Wheat/Weisse & Weizen; Belgian or French Ale, and Smoked or Barrel-aged.

Winners were picked in each of the 6 categories, with a “taste-off” for Best of Show. There were many excellent entries, with several scoring in the high 30's and a few getting 40's.

Five of the first place category winners will have their beer ramped-up and brewed at 5 co-sponsor Wisconsin brewpubs, including Milwaukee Ale House (Milwaukee), Hops Haven (Port Washington), Silver Creek (Cedarburg), Stone Cellar (Appleton) & Riverside (West Bend).

The six categories and 1st through 3rd Place winners are as follows:

Bock (5) co-sponsored by Cargill & Silver Creek – 14 Entries

Porter (12) co-sponsored by Briess Malting & HopsHaven (Port Washington)

C) IPA (14), co-sponsored by HopUnion & Stone Cellar – 7 Entries

D) Wheat, Weisse & Weizen (15) co-sponsored by Wyeast & Milwaukee Ale House– 8 Entries

E) Belgian or French Ale (16) co-sponsored by White Labs – 9 Entries

F) Smoke or Barrel-Aged (22) co-sponsored by Brewers Supply & Riverside - 5 Entries

Best of Show Winner: Brian Cihak (Belvidere, IL) for 5A Maibock

Thanks to all of our sponsors, who have provided prizes to all winners, as well as providing product for the brewpub ramp-up.

Look for a followup when these brews are scheduled, and especially when the production brew is available. Look also for several Milwaukee Monster Mash parties in Milwaukee & throughout Wisconsin at the participating Brewpubs.

Looking forward to your entries for the 2007 Milwaukee Monster Mash.
