BREW (Brewing Review Education and Wisdom) session

This is a BREW (Brewing Review Education and Wisdom) session for BJCP CEP (Continuing Education Program) points.

We will discuss three beer styles in detail. This discussion will include history, characteristics and brewing of the styles. There will also be a potential flaw discussed.

One-half a point will be given to anyone in the BJCP program as long as they attend the entire session and pass the test given. The cost will be between $10 and $20 based on the number of people who sign up.

Upcoming sessions

When: Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 10:00 AM
In this installment we will cover Maibock, Traditional Bock, and Doppelbock. The flaw will be sweetness. This will include the difference between under attenuation and balance as well as discussion on different types of sugars in brewing.

When: Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 10:00 AM
In this installment we will cover wheat beers, American Wheat, German Weissbier and Belgian Witbier, with cloudiness as the "flaw". There will not be samples for the flaw but it will include discussion of factors that cause cloudiness and how to control them with emphasis on proteins, which will involve the protein rest. The style discussion will include history, characteristics of the beers, how to judge and brew the beer as well as sampling and practice judging.

When: September 21st at 7:00 PM
The topic will be IPAs and bitterness. IPAs will include English, American and Imperial. The discussion on bitterness will focus on identifying levels of bitterness (not astringency) based on style as well as bitterness to malty ratios.

October 8th at 10:00 AM - Oktoberfest, Vienna Lager & Rauchbier / Phenolics
November (TBD) - Porters / Fruity
December (TBD) - Dry, Sweet and Oatmeal Stouts / Astringency

Place: O'Keefe's House of Hamburg (formerly Port of Hamburg), 5937 S. Howell Ave, Milwaukee

Plan to stick around a for a beer afterward at House of Hamburg. Please patronize O'Keefe's House of Hamburg, Tim & Mona let us use the hall free of charge. They also have good food and serve a traditional German lunch on Saturday.
